## FAIR Principle R1.2: (meta)data are associated with detailed provenance

FAIR Principle R1.2 requires that (meta)data are associated with detailed provenance. Within the ARK-based benchmarks, this principle focuses on database provenance, stewardship, responsibility, funding context, and attribution.

Database provenance is an important FAIR-enabling characteristic because users, funders, database managers, and assessment services must be able to understand who is responsible for a database, how it is supported, and what evidence exists regarding its stewardship and sustainability. Clear provenance information supports trust, accountability, informed reuse, and appropriate attribution.

The R1.2 metrics associated with the ARK-based benchmarks evaluate database provenance governance and database capabilities that support provenance information for content stored within the database.
