# FAIR I2 for database evaluation

## I2 – (Meta)data use vocabularies that follow FAIR principles

FAIR Principle I2 requires that (meta)data use vocabularies that follow FAIR principles. Within the ARK-based benchmarks, this principle focuses on whether databases adopt terminologies that support semantic interoperability and consistent interpretation of their content.

Terminologies are important FAIR-enabling characteristics because they provide shared meanings for concepts represented within data and metadata. The use of recognised terminology resources can improve consistency, interoperability, integration, and reuse across databases and communities.

The ARK-based benchmarks evaluate whether databases are associated with terminology artefacts represented within FAIRsharing. The benchmark does not evaluate the FAIRness of individual terminology resources themselves; rather, it evaluates whether databases adopt terminology resources that may support FAIR use of their content.

The metrics associated with I2 evaluate the adoption of terminology artefacts through FAIRsharing database relationships.

**Future Work**

In future, we could consider evaluating the syntactic/semantic nature of these terminologies; currently this is only done with model/formats, as part of the I1 evaluations.
