# FAIR F1 for database evaluation

## FAIR Principle F1: metadata are assigned persistent, globally unique and resolvable identifiers

<https://doi.org/10.25504/FAIRsharing.a2cea7>

FAIR Principle F1 requires that (meta)data are assigned identifiers that support unambiguous identification and long-term reference. Within the ARK-based benchmarks, this principle focuses on database identifier practices and the FAIR-enabling qualities those practices provide for content stored within databases.

Persistent, globally unique, and resolvable identifiers are fundamental FAIR-enabling characteristics because they support discovery, citation, interoperability, machine navigation, and long-term stewardship of digital objects. Databases that assign identifiers with these qualities to at least a subset of their records help ensure that database content can be reliably referenced and accessed over time.

The metrics associated with the ARK-based benchmarks evaluate database identifier practices relating to persistence, global uniqueness, and resolvability.

**Future work**

Future work could expand F1 to evaluate:

* database as a whole has a GUPRI
* metadata record under evaluation (here, the FAIRsharing record) has a GUPRI
